Opening your home to a foster cat is one of the most rewarding ways you can support animal rescue. Foster carers provide a safe, loving environment where cats can recover, build confidence and prepare for life in a forever home.
At Big Hearts 4 Small Paws, our rescue is entirely foster-based. Without foster carers, we simply couldn't continue helping vulnerable cats across West Sussex.
Whether a cat has been abandoned, surrendered or needs extra time before adoption, fostering gives them the stability they need while allowing us to continue rescuing others.
Saving Lives
Every foster home creates space for another cat in need. By welcoming a cat into your home, you allow us to help more cats who have nowhere else to go. Quite simply, every foster placement gives another cat a second chance.

Our team is here to support you throughout your fostering journey. We're always on hand to answer questions, offer advice and provide guidance whenever you need it through our friendly and welcoming Whatsapp Groups.
We Provide Everything You Need
One of the biggest misconceptions about fostering is that it can be expensive.
At Big Hearts 4 Small Paws, we provide everything needed for your foster cat, including:
Food
Litter
Toys and bedding where required
Carrier if needed
Flea and worm treatment
All veterinary care and associated costs
Your role is simply to provide a safe, loving home while we take care of the rest.
Preparing Your Home
Before your foster cat arrives, we'll talk you through everything you need to know. A quiet room, fresh water, a litter tray and somewhere comfortable to rest are usually all that's needed to help your foster settle in. We'll advise you on introductions to resident pets and answer any questions before placement.
What to Expect
Every cat is different.
Some settle in within hours, while others need days or even weeks to build confidence. Some are playful from the start, whilst others simply need somewhere peaceful to decompress after a difficult start in life. Patience, routine and kindness make all the difference.
The Difficult Days
Fostering can be incredibly rewarding, but we also believe in being honest about the difficult days.
Cats coming into rescue haven't always had the easiest start. Some may arrive frightened, poorly or with health problems that only become apparent once they're in foster care. This can mean medication, vet visits, sleepless nights and, occasionally, making difficult decisions alongside the rescue and our veterinary team.
Sadly, despite everyone's best efforts, there may also be times when a cat or kitten becomes seriously unwell or passes away. Losing an animal you've cared for can be heartbreaking, and it's one of the hardest realities of fostering.
You won't be expected to deal with those situations alone. Our team will be there to support you, arrange appropriate veterinary care and guide you through what happens next.
Fostering isn't always easy, and we would never pretend that it is. But being the person who gave a vulnerable cat safety, warmth and love when they needed it most matters, even when their story doesn't have the ending we all hoped for.
Watching Them Grow
One of the most rewarding parts of fostering is watching a frightened or uncertain cat gradually become confident again.
The first purr.
The first time they ask for fuss.
The first time they curl up beside you.
Those little milestones are what fostering is all about.
Saying Goodbye
The hardest part of fostering is saying goodbye.
It can be emotional watching a cat you've cared for leave your home, but there's something incredibly special about knowing they're starting the next chapter of their life with a family of their own.
And once they've found that forever home, you're ready to help the next cat who needs you.
